Bra Fit and Breast Health

Understanding the significance of proper breast support during any activity is crucial for every woman. StriveCQ spoke with Professor Deirdre McGhee to gain her expert insights and lessons learnt from her research supporting women, from grassroots to the professional leagues.

Why is it important?

Proper bra fit and breast support can:

  • enhance performance, especially improving posture, range of movement and muscle strength
  • increase confidence and participation
  • reduce pain and discomfort
  • reduce the risk of injury.

”No female would play sport without a bra!
Yet, so little attention is paid to this sporting equipment.”

What you need to know.

Key information about choosing and using a sports bra.

DESIGN

Bras should have wide, strong elastic bands and provide full breast coverage.

FIT

✽ Ensure the bra fits correctly, covering all breast tissue, feeling snug but comfortable.

Check fit regularly as bras wear out and personal needs change over time.

SUPPORT

Breast size*, athlete age, and type of activity affects requirements.

A high-support bra minimises breast movement and pain, enhancing comfort and performance.

*Wearing two bras for larger breasts (DD+) can improve comfort, especially where the sport involves running, jumping and forceful arm movements.

Insights and tips

Some practical insights from Professore McGhee to help make an informed decision about breast support.

  • It is safe for women to play contact sports.
  • More bra support is needed with age as skin elasticity decreases from 25 years old.
  • Stop chaffing with correct bra fit, soft material, no seams or clasps and adding a barrier cream (e.g., nappyrash cream)
  • Record and report any breast injuries during sport to a coach, trainer or healthcare professional.
